penny radio podcastHi there, I’m James Whittington, the person behind Penny Radio – the personal finance podcast that will help you master your money.

Like most people, I grew up not knowing much about money and finance.  At school I was alright at Maths but chose to study Geography at university instead.  After uni I landed a job in the financial industry and have worked in banking and insurance since then.  After a while I decided to study for the financial advisor qualifications in my spare time.  This is where my understanding of how things worked really took off.  I achieved Fellowship status of the Personal Finance Society (FPFS) in just 2.5 years, winning several awards along the way.

Outside of the world of finance I have lots of other passions in life.  I have been very fortunate to have explored the world, travelling for over 2 years.  Despite spending over a year in Latin America I am still learning Spanish!  I’m much slower at learning Spanish than everything finance-based, so I understand how frustrating and difficult learning something new can be!

When I travel I enjoy scuba diving and paragliding. Back in the UK I’m really into rugby and am a massive Leicester Tigers fan!  I also like running, although my body is less keen on both rugby and running these days!

You can find out more about me on my LinkedIn profile.

I didn’t always know what I wanted to do in life – in fact part of me still wants to be the spaceman version of Indiana Jones that I was sure I would grow up to be when I was 6 years old!  I’ve also always been interested in the idea of teaching or tutoring to help others and as my interest in finance has grown, this has become a real passion of mine, hence the birth of Penny Radio.

Understanding money and our finances can be really hard and scary to face – it is a difficult and costly life skill to learn through trial and error. And a lot of people either don’t realise they can get help and advice or cannot afford to access it. In fact those that need it most have the least access to financial advice. That’s why I really want to help people get an understanding of how to manage their money. And in my lifetime I hope to see pro bono financial advice made available to those that need it most. This can only come about if government, educational institutions, charities and financial advisors all work together to achieve this.

I think it is so important for everyone to be able to manage their money.  Not only will it help you to achieve your life goals and ambitions, but it will help you to avoid or prepare for those nasty surprises that can be just around the corner.  I believe that everyone can learn to master their money.  Sometimes you may need a little help and some specialist advice, but for the most part, once you know how, it can be very straightforward.

Taking control to secure your financial future is a decision only you can make, but Penny Radio will show you how to do it and I’ll be with you every step of the way.
